Monthly Meetings:

Regular general meetings with a speaker will take place on the 4th Thursday of the month, with coffee and chat at 10:00 am and the meeting starting at 10:30 am.  Whilst the current Covid problems are around meetings will be a hybrid, with some people in the town hall and some on Zoom, so that those people who don't feel comfortable with meeting in person can still view the meeting via Zoom. Talks will cover a wide range of topics of broad general and local interest. The list of speakers and topics is shown below. There's something for everyone there!

Thursday June 23rd 2022 - A Ride Round England: one man, one horse, 2,700 miles and 30 cathedrals - William Reddaway
This talk is about a long ride William embarked on as a retirement project between 10 May and 8 December 2013. He travelled on a form of transport for which all the infrastructure has long disappeared, which is interesting.

Thursday September 22nd - Southern Reach - Al Sylvester
This epic tale focuses on how Al lead the RAF's first unsupported attempt on the Geographic South Pole. He will describe how he selected and trained his team to survive in tents on Antarctica, and to ski 600 nautical miles to the bottom of the earth. Al provides a personal account of day-to-day living on the ice: of surviving on dried food, the challenges of toilet drills and of skiing in temperatures of - 45 degrees! There is little doubt that Antarctica is one of the most beautiful but most hostile locations in the world. He will conclude his presentation by recounting the effects of frostbite and the mental resilience and determination required to recover, so that he could again lead others to fulfil their dreams.

Thursday October 27th - The Monarch’s Way - Howard Robinson
As one of our most popular speakers, it will be a pleasure to welcome Howard back to provide another u3a talk, hopefully in person.  Charles II, having lost the battle of Worcester in 1651, narrowly managed to escape. He rode north and, after trying to swim across the River Severn to Wales, eventually ended up at Boscobel where he famously hid in an Oak Tree. He then trekked a distance of 625 miles over 44 days.

Howard’s talk will inform us about Charles’s multiple narrow escapes, and his various attempts at commissioning a ship to carry him to safety. He eventually travelled across the channel to exile in France before being restored to the throne in 1660. It was a truly an amazing adventure, details of which he dictated to Samuel Pepys before he died, and well worth the retelling! Howard Robinson, who has previously provided popular u3a talks, will present a fully illustrated narrative for our enjoyment.
