Photography Group recent activity
The photographic group recently had a look at colour photography versus black and white. An exercise was set to see if the Autumn Colours of Westonbirt could be rendered well in black and white.
The following examples show that sometimes black and white can be powerful, even when the colours are beautiful:
The black and white creates a different atmosphere, the figure being dominant with an emphasis on the dramatic shape of the tree. Photo John O`Brien
These pictures by Phil Yates provoked discussion. The rich colours communicated autumn but the black and white offers a bleaker, moodier atmosphere. The cross lighting is more dominant in the right hand picture.
Self portrait by Jeremy North. It was agreed that “craggy” faces of older people with strong character lines could be more dramatic in black and white. This was shot in the arboretum in the shade on a tripod with delayed timer.
Photograph by Val McCauley. Some pictures need colour to express themselves and here the colour leads the eye through the picture. Black and white would not work too well here, reducing the picture to shades of grey that would be too close together in tone.
If you are interested in photography and think you might want to join us (we have a very wide range of experience and offer tutorials) why not listen in at our next zoom meeting on January 20? The meeting is open to the whole membership. To attend contact our leader for the meeting at jeremy@jeremynorth.com
